My current drawing assignment involves making three versions of one character, with only the hair color changing between the finished images. The outfit is mostly blue, the background is quiet, and the final drawings will often be viewed as fairly small images. My first options are dark brown, light copper, and silver, chosen because they create noticeably different relationships with the existing colors. For background vocabulary, I saved a link from my reading about a personal color test as a starting point for further reading. I would like the terminology to help with critique, while leaving room for the intentional color exaggeration that illustration often uses. The issue is deciding whether the hair supports the face or distracts from it, especially when the picture is reduced in size. What sequence would you suggest for a side by side review, a value check, and a short critique from other students? Please suggest concrete things to look for, so our feedback describes what each version does within this particular composition.
